Eric Silva, whose nickname is “Rico”, is part of the great adventure of Cape Verde basketball that began in 1997 in Dakar, Senegal, when Cape Verde qualified for the FIBA Africa Championship for the first time.
The starting point guard, Silva had been playing at the regional level in France in Marly-le-Roi and was already saying at the time that his future was on the bench and not the court. Having served as a player-coach at his club, he eventually accepted the chance to serve as National Team boss Emmanuel Trovoada’s assistant and helped Cape Verde win bronze in Angola last year at the FIBA Africa Championship. Trovoada, citing family reasons, wasn’t able to lead the team at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament so Silva, who was born in Dakar to a Cape Verdian mother, will hold the reins this summer.
