During an outstanding college career with the University of Wisconsin, Penney helped the Badgers to two Big 10 conference titles and a Sweet Sixteen appearance as a senior in the NCAA Tournament. He was twice named all-conference. Penney was NBL Rookie of the Year in 1998 when he helped North Harbour to the final. Penney has now represented New Zealand at two Olympics and two FIBA World Championships. He averaged 16.9 points at the 2002 FIBA World Championship. The guard became the second Kiwi in the NBA when he appeared for the Miami Heat in 2003. He has also had a brief stint with the Los Angeles Clippers, and has since played professionally in Spain, the NBA Development League, Israel, Lithuania and Germany. Penney played with the NZ Breakers in last summer’s Australian NBL, finishing as the third leading scorer (24.0 points) and earning selection to the All-NBL Team.
