HAMILTON (FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men) – New Zealand finally tasted victory in their build-up to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament by beating Lebanon on Wednesday night at the Jack Donohue International Classic in Canada.
Craig Bradshaw led the way with 18 points while Kirk Penney weighed in with 17 in an 84-71 triumph over the Asian opponents.
Both teams played at the 2006 FIBA World Championship, and the Lebanese will also be taking part in this month’s Olympic qualifying event.
While Tall Blacks coach Nenad Vucinic has tried to maintain an even keel, saying it’s important not to get too high after wins nor too low after defeats, he was extremely relieved following three consecutive thrashings – two by Australia and one on Tuesday by Canada.
“Nothing beats a win,” Vucinic said, “after the first three games, when really we didn’t play well.
“The Lebanon team is an experienced team, plenty of international experience. I was worried about the game but after a slow start we really picked it up and played a really solid basketball game.
“It was a crucial game for us in terms of morale and confidence. After another slow start we were in danger of falling away again and I really challenged the guys.”
Indeed, Lebanon jumped out to a 15-4 advantage midway through the opening quarter but the Tall Blacks battled back.
New Zealand had struggled against intense defensive pressure by the Australians while against the Canadians, they simply weren’t able to knock down their shots.
That changed against Lebanon with the Tall Blacks burying 11 of 21 from long range.
“The Lebanese defense is nowhere as good as the Australian defense,” Vucinic said, “but I don’t want to take anything away from our guys. They played well. Last night against Canada, we put up as many shots but they just didn’t fall.”
Lebanon, who will be in Group A with hosts Greece and Brazil at the qualifying event, got a game-high 20 points from Rony Fahed.
He also dished out seven assists and grabbed seven rebounds.
Lebanon’s most famous player, Fadi El Khatib, had 16 points, nine rebounds and four helpers.
New Zealand will play in Group B against Germany and Cape Verde.
Twelve teams will compete for three spots still available for the Beijing Games at the qualifying event in Greece.
