ATHENS (FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men) – Brazil clinched a quarter-final place and warmed up for a Group A showdown against hosts Greece with a huge victory over Lebanon on Tuesday.
The South American giants outscored the Lebanese 18-3 over the last five minutes of the first quarter for a 27-8 lead and they used that run as a launchpad for a 94-54 victory.
Brazil now face Greece, with the losers likely to face a Germany side that includes not only Dirk Nowitzki but also fellow NBA star Chris Kaman.
Duda, the younger brother of Brazil veteran Marcelinho who had nine points in 16 minutes against Lebanon, is looking forward to Wednesday’s game against the hosts.
“We played against them in the Acropolis Tournament and the coach let the second five play in the last quarter,” Duda said. “It’s what I like, that kind of atmosphere.”
Point guard Marcelo Huertas led Brazil with 17 points, Baby poured in 16 and Murilo 14 for the Brazilians.
Lebanon crashed out of the tournament, and star forward Fadi El Khatib promised a better showing from the national side at next year’s FIBA Asia Championship.
“We’ll be much better,” El Khatib said.
“I wasn’t even supposed to play because I’m injured but when Joe (Vogel) got hurt (in the preparations), the coach said I had to come.
“I’m not even in shape now. We definitely be better and qualify for the World Championship.”
